Hydration and Heat Safety Tips
As families are enjoying outdoor activities this weekend, Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital wants them to remember these helpful tips for having fun in the sun!
Water
- For every 20 minutes of physical activity or heat exposure, children should have 10 gulps of water. Teens need 20 gulps. While water is great, drinks with balanced electrolytes like Pedialyte are the perfect boost for sodium, potassium and magnesium.
Ice Pack
- When packing your cooler, don’t forget to add ice packs. Ice packs, a cooling towel or a cold water bottle can be placed on the back of a child’s neck and forehead to cool them down.
Portable Fans
- High temperatures and sun exposure can increase a child’s body temperature. Utilize portable fans or neck fans to cool them down.
Umbrellas and Shade
- Umbrellas can reduce direct sun exposure when outside for extended periods of time. While you’re taking a hydration break, find a shady spot to cool off before returning to activities.
